THEHOUSE

A cultural centre in Boudhanath, the Licchavi House is a place where Nepal’s living heritage meets the questions, ideas, and creative energy of the present.

Licchavi House sits a few steps from the great stupa of Boudhanath, in a building restored around a quiet brick courtyard. Its timber walkways, carved windows and open stairways draw on the Newar architecture of the Kathmandu Valley, while its rooms are made for the way people gather today.

It is a home for artists, thinkers, practitioners and neighbours: a place to see an exhibition, join a workshop, watch a film or simply spend an afternoon with a book and a cup of tea.

Everything we host grows from one idea: heritage is not something to keep behind glass, but something to live with, question and carry forward.

The House is rooted in the cultural and spiritual life of Boudhanath. Our name recalls the Licchavi era, when the Kathmandu Valley became a crossroads of art, faith and learning, and that spirit of exchange still shapes what we do.

Inside, a quiet shrine room sits alongside spaces for talks, performances and shared meals. Traditional craft (carved timber, handmade brick, terrazzo floors) meets contemporary design, so the past is something you can touch rather than only look at.

We believe culture stays alive when it is practised, together.

Licchavi House is built for community: a place where people of every age and background can meet, learn from one another and feel at home.

Whether you come for a workshop, a performance or a conversation over coffee, you become part of a growing circle of people who care about Nepal's living culture.

Our cafe, courtyard and shared rooms are open by design, so chance encounters can turn into friendships and new ideas.

Many of our programmes are shaped by the people who take part in them, and we welcome anyone who would like to host, teach or collaborate.

The people behind the house

Licchavi House is cared for by a small team of curators, programmers and hosts who bring the house to life every day.
